Bulk Pricing vs. Tiered Discounts: What's Right for Your E-commerce Store?

"Bulk pricing" and "tiered discounts" get used interchangeably in a lot of Shopify app marketing, but they solve genuinely different problems. Getting the distinction right matters more than it sounds, because picking the wrong one tends to either under-incentivise the behaviour you want or quietly give away margin on orders that didn't need a discount at all.

Bulk pricing rewards quantity of a single item

Bulk (or quantity-break) pricing discounts based on how many units of a specific product a customer adds to their cart — buy 1 at full price, buy 3 and each unit drops 10%, buy 6 and each unit drops 20%. It's the right fit when your margin structure genuinely improves with volume, such as when a larger order reduces your per-unit shipping or packaging cost, or when you're trying to train customers into a subscription-like repeat-purchase habit.

Tiered (cart-value) discounts reward total spend, across any products

Tiered discounts look at the whole cart rather than a single line item. A customer might buy one of three different products and still unlock free shipping at $75 or 10% off at $120. This is the better fit for stores with a broad catalog where customers naturally mix and match — apparel, home goods, beauty — because it doesn't force a customer to buy multiples of one thing just to get a deal.

A simple way to decide

  • If customers typically buy multiples of the same SKU (supplements, refills, consumables) → bulk pricing.
  • If customers typically buy a mix of different products in one order (apparel, gifts, home goods) → cart-value tiers.
  • If you want to do both, apply bulk pricing at the product level and a cart-value tier as a separate, storewide layer — just keep the two rules clearly labelled so customers understand which discount applied where.

Display matters as much as the mechanic

Whichever model you choose, the discount needs to be visible before checkout, not discovered as a surprise at the very end. A quantity-break table on the product page, or a progress bar toward the next cart-value tier, does more to lift average order value than the underlying discount percentage does. Customers respond to a visible, nearby goal far more than to a rule they have to calculate themselves.

We built Discount Hub — Bulk & Cart Sale specifically to let Shopify merchants run both bulk quantity breaks and cart-value tiers from one app, with the progress shown to customers in real time. You can read more on our Shopify Apps page.
